Mahon is the ideal starting point for exploring Menorca, the Balearics’ most northerly sister, like the entire island, Mahon has preserved an authentic feel. Having escaped relatively unscathed from 1970s skyscraper hotel “planning”, the island’s protected countryside and isolated beaches are a joy to discover. Not that today’s visitors are the first to realise this, though. The British were charmed by Mahon’s impressive port long before the first charter flight landed on Menorca’s soil in the 1950s. Once coveted for its strategic value, nowadays this protected natural harbour is admired for the spectacular boats bobbing in its calm waters, and for the numerous bars and restaurants to choose from on the waterfront. Up a set of endless steps, Mahon – in true Mediterranean style – bustles with activity (apart from siesta time, naturally). Between cobbled streets, foreboding stone churches and charming squares, Mahon invites you to elbow your way past gossiping housewives at the many open air markets, dodge children chasing each other to the swings, and eavesdrop while elderly men put local politicians through their paces. But if all that seems like hard work, just sink into a chair on a café terrace and watch the world go by.
